UnitedHealth HEROES

UnitedHealthcare is inviting schools and other community-based nonprofit organizations to “Step into Service” by applying for UnitedHealth HEROES grants.  Grants of up to $1,000 are available for youth-led service-learning projects which aim to combat childhood obesity through walking, running or hiking programs.

Project proposals for UnitedHealth HEROES grants must include an activity element where young people can count their steps, such as walking, running or hiking, as well as a service component which provides direct service, enables advocacy on behalf of a cause, or features youth philanthropy.

Before getting started with your online application please be sure you have downloaded and read the UnitedHealth HEROES Applicant User Guide.  The guide is designed to give you all the information you need about the HEROES program and share with you helpful ideas for your project.

To help prepare and submit your application please download and use the Scoring Rubric that YSA reviewers will use to score your application.

Previous 2012 Grantees:

As the program is described, the UnitedHealth HEROES grants for 2013 will have a focus on addressing the issue of childhood obesity by getting youth involved in walking, running, or hiking programs.  However, we understand that some previous grant recipients have established ongoing programs not based on walking, for which they apply for a new UnitedHealth HEROES grant each year.

For the 2013 UnitedHealth HEROES program, these grantees are eligible to apply for a grant that continues their existing program, and does not include a focus on walking, running or hiking.  The program must be addressing the issue of childhood obesity, and follow all of the other criteria that are set out above for UnitedHealth HEROES projects.  Applicants must have been a 2012 UnitedHealth HEROES grant recipient.

Please note on your application that you are applying for an exception to the UnitedHealth HEROES’ focus on walking, running, or hiking.
